of Gibraltar. We arose and departed for the drive to the closest point to Africa, only a mere 14km in the distance and clearly visible from the coast, just like the South Island from Wellington. Except of course it was AFRICA!!! Land of adventure. Our adventure today though was climbing the Rock of Gibraltar which even from a distance instantly appeared perfect for pirates, tall ships, sail boats, smugglers and hideouts and we weren't dissapointed. However, once we were close enough to judge the size of said rock we decided to take a taxi tour and save ourselves the monumental effort of (almost literally) climbing up.
Of the things the rock is famous for is its free living apes – the Barbary apes - which are the only such apes in Europe. They aren’t shy and one of them even used Marcel as a tree. We also got to go underground into the huge caverns which lead to caves which possibly even lead to Africa, a theory we decided not to test out, and also visited said pirate (commonwealth) lairs and tunnels. All good fun but all that monkeying around was pretty exhausting so on our return home I found time for a late siesta and then a dip in the Mediterranean followed by sangria and tapas.
